Marlene, bisexual enjoyed a somewhat thriving gay scene in 1920's Berlin. Dietrich defied conventional gender roles - dressing in a top hat and tails to perform 'male' songs, boxing at Sabri Mahir's boxing studio and attending Berlins' drag balls. In 1930, Dietrich starred in 'Morocco' a movie where her character, a cabaret singer kisses another woman whilst dressed in a mans tuxedo. Marlene was a part of a secret society of underground closeted lesbian & bisexual film actresses in Hollywood. This group, affectionately known as 'Marlene's Sewing Circle' was rumoured to include the like of Greta Garbo, Claudette Colbert and Edith Piaf to name a few.
